In February 2024, I was named Director of Baseball Research for the Guelph Royals. Upon entering the role, there was no existing analytics department.
After receiving the position, I had made an emphasis to have league-wide data. This was to ensure that we had information on anyone who comes off the bench or out of the bullpen.
In order to do this, I had to find people who could consistently collect games totaling at 216 games. I made a LinkedIn post to draw attention and candidates to the posting.
I received over 30 emails and interviewed 20 candidates for the "Data Analyst" role. Being on the other side of setting up an interview was a strange perspective I have never had before but I learned so much in the process.
Over the season, the department collected over 55,000 pitches.
From there, I created a website that presented data which was transformed into statistics by R scripts. The data was stored using SQL to ensure that the website runs seamlessly.
On the website, all of the players in the league had their own pages including a spot to generate reports. These were generated before every game and used for on-field decisions.
